Seawater Desalination Rotor Energy Recovery and Coaxial Booster Device

01 R&D Background

In recent years, with the development and widespread application of reverse osmosis seawater desalination technology, energy recovery from the high‑pressure concentrate (more than 60% of the feed) has become a key concern in the industry. Discharging the high‑pressure concentrate directly after reverse osmosis would cause significant energy waste and increase the cost of producing fresh water from seawater. Therefore, a device is needed to transfer the high pressure from the concentrate to the feed seawater that requires reverse osmosis treatment, without directly mixing the concentrate with the feed. Currently, there is no such device in China; main options are imported from ERI (PX series) in the U.S. and Danfoss (iSave, APM) in Denmark. Inevitable pressure losses occur during the desalination and recovery processes, and direct recovery cannot meet the inlet pressure requirement of the reverse osmosis membrane. The problem with the aforementioned imported devices is that they require a separate booster pump to raise the pressure, which increases equipment investment, including space occupation, equipment cost, maintenance cost, and also leads to many external piping connections, complex pipe networks, and high leakage risk. Moreover, imported devices are expensive and have long after‑sales service cycles.

To address this, our company has specially developed a new type of energy recovery device that uses integrated rotor pressure exchange technology. It not only solves the energy recovery problem for concentrate but also addresses pressure compensation, eliminates external piping connections, and offers better sealing performance. Additionally, it features low noise, a small overall footprint, and easy installation. It breaks the monopoly of imported products, reduces overall equipment cost, shortens delivery and after‑sales maintenance cycles, and has good market prospects.

02 Core Technologies and Innovations

The rotor energy recovery and coaxial booster device features an integrated design with compact structure, high energy recovery efficiency, fewer external piping connections, and excellent sealing performance. The energy recovery pump unit technology further reduces device dimensions by integrating energy recovery and boosting components into a single housing, and integrating all inlet/outlet ports on one end cover, making connection, use and maintenance convenient while providing superior sealing properties.
